Nintendo Switch owners, rejoice! A new app called nOS, developed by Polish studio RedDeer Games, is set to turn your handheld console into a full-fledged tablet. This new app is taking the customization of the Switch's user experience to the next level by providing an array of app-like functionality.
While the Switch's capacitive touchscreen is not among the most outdated features, developers that take advantage of this capability are few and far between. Despite its tablet-like form factor and internal components similar to an Android device, Nintendo has not encouraged non-gaming software development for the Switch in the past six years. But nOS is changing that by providing Switch owners with a highly modular piece of software that allows them to add a variety of tablet-like apps and features to their handheld console.
Out of the box, nOS supports a variety of functionalities such as a calculator, notepad, day planner, to-do list, paint app, and a multimedia gallery. The nOS promotional materials shared by RedDeer Games even reveal a sliding puzzle game built into the app. And the best part is that the app is being designed with reliability and accessibility in mind, which means that it will be user-friendly for everyone.
The app is still without an official price tag, but the utilitarian nature of its feature set seems to have all the makings of a £10 or £20 app. This is a great deal considering the amount of features and functionality that nOS is offering.
While Nintendo is still putting out Switch firmware updates on a regular basis, those releases almost exclusively consist of minor changes to the console's operating system. Given that state of affairs, anyone who is still hoping to unlock the tablet potential of the Switch is likely to see the nOS app as their best opportunity yet.
Doubly so if ease of use is a concern; namely, the Switch has been capable of running Android for years now thanks to its vibrant homebrew scene, but the subset of its users willing to learn how to hack their consoles just to turn them into low-end tablets has never been particularly large relative to its install base. Not to mention that not all combinations of its hardware and firmware variants are hackable, and jailbreaking a Switch can also introduce the risk of having one's Nintendo Account banned.
nOS is the perfect solution for those who want to unlock the full potential of their Nintendo Switch without the hassle and risks of hacking. The app is expected to be released sometime in January 2023, so be sure to mark your calendars and get ready to experience your Switch like never before.
